Performance Engineering addresses the performance of computer-based systems. This includes:

• defining performance metrics;
• performance data monitoring and processing;
• evaluation and assessment of system performance;
• performance assurance and optimization.

Techniques used include queueing analysis, simulation, emulation, and prototyping.

A typical performance engineering exercise involves: performance definition; data collection and analysis; performance modeling; optimization and prediction of performance.
