Quality and Architectural Concerns in Open Source Software
There is an increasing number of Open Source Software products available. For software developing organizations, such OSS products are becoming a viable alternative to Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products. However, practitioners may have serious architectural concerns and challenges when integrating such OSS products, as knowledge of architecture and design decisions (documentation) is often missing. This may be an obstacle for organizations to benefit from the various advantages that OSS may bring. This research focuses on identifying those architectural challenges. We believe that “architectural patterns” may be a helpful means to identify potential problems with OSS products. This research therefore also focuses on identifying such architectural patterns in OSS products, a research area that has not attracted much attention to date.
