Global Software Engineering (GSE) is undertaken when software teams are distributed, normally internationally. It continues to experience substantial growth and is fundamentally different to collocated development. As a result, software managers have a pressing need for support in how to successfully manage global project teams.
Under the guidance of Dr Ita Richardson, Lero researchers have studied GSE for over ten years. Through undertaking in-depth case studies of GSE within industry and investigating published case studies, they have identified factors which are important to the success of GSE. Subsequently, they have developed a Global Teaming model which addresses specific problems relating to temporal, cultural, geographic and linguistic distance. These are designed to meet the complex and changing needs of global software management.
In this talk, Dr Richardson will discuss some of the problems experiences with implementing Global Software Engineering, and present the Global Teaming Model solution. She will discuss recommended practices that can be used by software project managers, presenting the difficulties which can arise if these practices are not implemented.
